Annotation

The article aims to identify modern concepts of sustainable development of the region and methodological approaches to assessing its level. The study was carried out within the framework of two established theoretical and methodological approaches to sustainable development: Walras sustainability and Edgeworth sustainability. The author notes that the fundamental principle explaining the sustainability of development in economic systems is the Le Chatelier – Brown principle. In accordance with it, a system in a state of equilibrium undergoes, as a result of a change in one of the equilibrium parameters, such displacements of its other parameters that cause a change in this parameter in the opposite direction. The author notes five main approaches that explain sustainable development at the level of macro-, meso-, and microeconomics: 1) ecological-system; 2) anthropocentric; 3) the triune concept of sustainable development; 4) cluster approach to sustainable development; 5) the concept of corporate sustainability. It is concluded that with all the variety of existing methods for assessing the measurement of the level of sustainable development, two main approaches are used: 1) calculation of an integrated indicator that expresses the essence of sustainable development of the system as a whole; 2) the formation of a system of indicators reflecting various aspects of sustainable development of the system under study. Within these approaches, there is a wide variety of options for assessing the sustainability of a region’s development. However, the most common method is the three-pronged approach, which is due to its simplicity, clarity, comparability of calculation results for assessing the sustainable development of the region.
