Theoretical and practical aspects of the principles of functioning of the electricity market are considered. A brief description of the main directions of development and the principles of the electricity market in the countries of Central Asia: Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan is given. It is noted that the principles of operation of these electricity markets reflect the objective patterns of the functioning of the market. They should be taken into account when formulating strategies and programs to improve the efficiency of energy supply in the countries of Central Asia. The consequences of the implementation of these principles are given. Among them: support and development of market relations, development of a strategy for restoring and increasing existing capacities, ensuring energy security and sustainable development of the region, socio-economic development of the region based on stable electricity supply, etc. In conclusion, it is noted that the principles that reflect the objective laws of the electricity market and contributing to the formation of strategies and programs to improve the efficiency of energy supply in the countries of Central Asia, as a rule, are of a general nature. However, when relying on these principles, it is also important to take into account the real conditions for the functioning of the energy sector in each country in the region. Among them: the level of development of industrial production, the structure of the modern fuel and energy balance, the level of supply of energy resources, natural, economic and environmental conditions.
