PROSPECTS AND MECHANISMS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF RENEWABLE ENERGY IN TAJIKISTAN IN THE CONTEXT OF THE GLOBAL ENERGY TRANSITION

Abstract
The purpose of this article is to provide a comprehensive assessment of the prospects and mechanisms for the development of renewable energy sources (RES) in the Republic of Tajikistan in the context of the global energy transition. The article examines current trends, challenges, and opportunities for expanding the use of ecologically clean energy. Based on the analysis of data from international energy agencies and national statistics, key patterns in the dynamics of energy production and consumption are identified. Particular attention is paid to assessing the gross, technical, and economic potential of RES, including small hydropower, solar, and wind energy, taking into account the country’s natural and geographical conditions. The structure of investments is analyzed, and institutional and financial barriers to the sector’s development are identified. It is noted that, since Tajikistan is located in the upper reaches of Central Asia’s water resources, more than half of the region’s total river flow originates there. According to the international classification of renewable energy sources, this category includes hydroelectric power plants with a capacity of up to 30 MW. Based on this classification, the country’s economically viable small-scale hydropower potential is several times greater than its solar, wind, and biomass resources. The necessity of diversifying the energy balance and enhancing energy security is substantiated. Mechanisms of government support for the development of RES are proposed.
